Time Management Tips, how to juggle it all

The question I get ALL THE TIME is “how do you have time?!?”  It’s like people think it’s impossible for me to succeed at a corporate job, coach, and be a parent.  Well, I am here to tell you that is isn’t always easy, but it CAN be done and each job plays a very important role in my life.    So this is for those people who are currently in the work world, are interested in coaching, but think you can’t do both.

It is all about TIME MANAGEMENT!

This is how it works for me.  My first priority is to my family.  Second to my career at J&J, lastly coaching.

Here are some of my time management tips for every day.

  • Plan out your meals on the weekend.  I don’t have time to actually meal prep, but I either grocery shop or ShopRite from home everything I need for the week.  I’ll even freeze some meats to defrost later.  I know what I’m going to make for dinner so when we get home I just start cooking
  • Get up early.  I know this is the one that everyone hates, but when you carve out time in the morning you can start your day on the right foot.  For me, that means 5:30 exercise, 6:15 shower, kids up at 6:30-7, breakfast and getting the kids out the door by 8.
  • Work smarter, not harder.  I had a co-op last year say this and it stuck!  Instead of opening up 5,000 things.  Complete 1 task at a time, then move onto the next.  I also work through lunch in order to get more accomplished and sometimes take walking conference calls or meetings.
  • Put everything on the calendar.  There are actually a lot of hours in a day.

Here are my tips for adding coaching into the mix

  • Use social media scheduling tools.  When I have a group I am running and I know what I want the daily message to be, I use a free post scheduler like postcron.  I’ll plan out my week of posts on Sunday and schedule them to post daily at 6 am, while I am actually showering.
  • Put time on the calendar to exercise.  Mine is 5:30, that is an appointment with myself.  Don’t skip it.
  • Put time on the calendar to talk to people and ONLY check your phone/social media at that time.  Mine is 9-10pm or 10-11 pm after my husband goes to sleep.  I also check in on Sunday.

Bottom line, Be flexible and have fun.  Learn new things and meet new people.  You never know where inspiration will come from.
These 2 are why I do both.  The corporate world challenges my brain and coaching helps me grow as an individual.

Make time for what is important.  Even something as small as 10’minutes of coloring before bed really gives us quality time together.

Don’t limit yourself.  This is a big world that is growing and changing.  You have the ability to make an impact on people’s lives.   Think big.  Don’t put yourself in a box.  You can do and be whatever you set your mind to.  Never stop growing, never stop learning.

Snapchat

Snapchat.  I may be behind on this trend, but it is SO fun!   I am loving it.   Feel free to follow me at jessicaheidifit for some pretty crazy silly snaps, plus a lot of my kids too.

In light of my “snap” this morning.  I want to talk about LOVE.

Love yourself, and believe in yourself.  I was talking to someone last night who is interested in shakeology, interested in getting fit, and interested in the support I provide from my groups.  She wants to lose some weight and have more energy to play with her 3 kids.  Her hesitation… “what if I fail.”

This broke my heart!  We only fail, when we fail to try.  We all have limitless potential and are capable of phenomenal things.  Nothing sets you apart from the super successful person making 6 + figures and living the dream life.  The difference is they tried!

We all have a day 1, a week 1, month, year 1.  What is important is never losing sight of why we want something then taking the necessary steps to get there.

We can chant affirmations, create dream boards, and search for motivational posts on pinterest to our hearts content, but until we actually take those dreams and motivation and affirmations and ACT on them will something happen.

I hate how this quote has become SO overused, but if we want something we’ve never had, we have to do something we’ve never done…

I have been reading the Miracle Morning, and also listening to Jim Rohn, and I think the more enlightened version of that saying is, “SUCCESS IS SOMETHING YOU ATTRACT, BY THE PERSON YOU BECOME”

You are not that person yet.  But by making mindful choices daily to work later, or be kinder, or walk instead of drive, you are becoming that different person.

At the end of the day, who do you want to become?  I would love to help and encourage you to get there.   You hold all the power, now go unleash it.

Find your strong

I could start this with “beach weather is around the corner… Blah blah blah.” No.   Strong is not always about your body.

This NOT about looking good in a bathing suit.

This week has been really horrible. Social media always makes it seem like life is sunshine and rosy all the time. That everyone is doing everything and they’ve got their sh%# together and everyone is all smiles.

So not the case. No one wanted to wake up this week, I was a horrible mom and yelled most mornings, no screamed. I got to work stressed out, I missed 70% of my workouts, I picked the kids up late every day, I think they got a bath twice.

My current exercise group had an amazing week though, they felt stronger, more empowered, lost weight, got more done at work, had patience for their families. I just was not my best self.

We made up for it with ice cream Friday and some Saturday workouts.

The eternal debate… Hard or soft ice cream. Hard coffee ice cream is my weakness!

Felt better after sweating on Saturday.  Don’t have a weight bench for decline push-ups? Use the stairs!

Anyway, I am reaching out if you want help reclaiming your inner self. I need YOU to keep me accountable. I will be expanding April 4th and participating in #summerstrong with my coach.

I am going to share what I learn with you. I’ll recommend a workout you enjoy (from boot camp, cardio, weights to yoga/Pilates), I’ll provide motivation, support, a meal plan and friendship.

I have high interest already so comment below if you want in. I’m accepting 10 new clients only. We’ll chat and I’ll give more details.

Just visualize yourself 30, 60, 90 days from now. Where do you see yourself?   A faster runner?   Getting into that yoga headstand, or maybe succeeding at work, or having more patience for your family.   Let’s get you there.   It’s worked for me every time, now I want to share the feeling with you.

Nutrition, Exercise, Support…Success

Reclaim your strong.  Regain your happy.

Mental Resolve

Last Friday, as my blog post mentioned, I was pretty devastated. It did affect my weekend a bit which I am not proud of. During my workout this morning I had an epiphany, so I am writing this with my heart rate still recovering because we all know, if we don’t write it down immediately, the thought is lost forever.

Basically what I came to was, no matter what happens today I am not going to quit coaching. It has had so many positives in my life. The first is that I have reconnected and met so many amazing people. People doing it all against all odds. People who push through adversity. Everyone has their own story and I have loved learning about each persons life.

Secondly, a huge part of coaching is personal development. If I hadn’t started coaching, I would not have started listening to books in my car. I would have never picked up a success or motivational book and those books have advanced my career and helped my marriage.

Coaching is not about the money. It is about helping others (as well as myself) unleash the strong amazing person that is inside each and every one of us. The only way I can do that is to continue to reach out to more people. This blog, and instagram may become a bigger platform for me. The negativity on facebook is staggering sometimes. It is sad that with such a huge networking platform where we can reach the world people choose to complain about the weather or traffic. There are so many beautiful things we can share.

Plus fitness and nutrition are a passion of mine. It is FUN to see what the human body can do and even more fun to watch someone else realize it when their transformation begins.

Each person is going through something, and I am going to be there if they need a friend.

Devastated

Feeling pretty devastated today.   As many know, I have a full time career which I am very passionate about in addition to coaching.  It has been a busy week and I work so hard there.   No, it has been an insane week…

I feel like I am at a crossroads in life.  I don’t want coaching to jeopardize my career, but the thought of giving up coaching is tearing me up.  I literally have a knot in my chest.

I received an email today that I personally helped 44 people since I started 8 months ago.   I also got a message from a client this morning that she finally broke through her plateau after not being able to get below a certain # on the scale for years.   I had someone else this week tell me how much happier and stronger they feel…

Although my career in R&D is rewarding, it has challenges and creates stress.  Coaching has been a creative outlet, it has helped me grow, I have performed the best that I ever had before in my R&D career because of the daily exercise, positive thinking, and daily motivation and encouragement I have received from fellow coaches and clients.

Why can’t I do both?

I aim to continue to help others find their inner strength, I may just have to find other outlets.

Feels like such a sad day.  And it started out so wonderful.

Doing it all

I’ve been listening to a ton of books on my commute to and from work (thank you audible) and this theme has been resonating with me a lot, I wanted to bring it up.

When we do what is in line with our values we are at peace.

If you value time with your family, but whenever you are home you are on your phone there will be an internal struggle within yourself.

These guys are the ones I need to put first.

But the struggle is so REAL!

I want to learn about new innovative products for skincare, dive deeper into the acne category, explore new ingredients and run a million experiments.  I want to exercise, train for a marathon, lift, swim, bike, and get yoga certified.  I want to learn about the biochemistry of nutrition, I want to understand carb cycling and macros in addition to other modes of calculating how much of each nutrient you should be eating.  I want to read motivational books, and journal, and reach out to as many people as I can and help hundreds of moms get in shape and start taking care of themselves.  BUT, at the core of everything I don’t want to miss my kids childhood.  Seriously, because I mean, how cute are they?!

I REALLY want to do all these things and I want to give 100%, but in reality I just can’t!  There are only 24 hours in a day.

I had to find a way to do some but make sure I was putting my kids and husband first. I started realizing that I was spending so much time away from my kids because I was working and I started to not enjoy my work as much. I made it a point to put my phone away from the moment I walked in house until the kids went to bed. By just making that small change, those 2 hours are for my kids. I mean, sort of. I am still cooking dinner and cleaning up during that time, but if they are talking to me, they have my attention. I am not being distracted.  I may pull it out to snap pictures here and there of dinners we are making.

I found ways to accomplish most of what I want to in the 24 hours a day that I am given.

I have my entire life to become an expert in any of those field.  I will run a marathon some day and I will get my yoga certification some day.  That day is just not today.

Think about the things that you value in your life, put them first and the rest will fall into place.

We may just have to prioritize the amazingness.

Reality Testing

I’m listening to this book on my commute to and from work called “Motivational Legends”

One of the guys had such a great speech I wanted to share a piece.  He called it reality testing.

What is your go to excuse?  Have no time?  Why don’t you?  Want to be skinny? Why aren’t you?  Want to be in a good relationship?  Why aren’t you?  Want to be financially independent?  What’s stopping you?

Take any of your excuses and do a reality check.  Has anyone in your situation accomplished what you want?  How about 5 people?  How about 10 people?  How about the 500,000 people since the beginning of the republic of the United States that have had it much worse than you but have accomplished what you want.

Your excuse is invalid. It has no substance. It is merely a fantasy. An illusion we use not to make progress.

Wow, that is some heavy tough love.  But rings so true. What is stopping you?

We need to get out of our own way.  It isn’t our external environment that is stopping us. 80% of what we want can be achieved by our internal mindset and our willingness to do, to be, to change.

The other piece is you have to refuse to believe in failure.

He has a whole other piece on self efficacy.  Check back next week for more on manifesting your dreams into reality.

Inaction

“I don’t know what to do.”  It’s something I’ve been hearing a lot lately.

Inaction and indecision can be crippling.  Sometimes we KNOW we need to do something, or we really WANT to do something, but we just don’t.

We want to exercise, or change up our eating, try something new, apply for that job, tell someone our feelings but we are in this freeze mode.  An almost panic.

What’s stopping us?  Fear of the unknown?  Fear of change?  Fear of possibilities?  Fear of success?

I am telling you right now, no matter how uncertain you are about an opportunity in your life, just say YES.

Go for it!  Really, what do you have to lose?  I promise, the minute you make a decision you will feel so much better.

I saw this quote by Tina Fey and I hung it up at my desk.  She said:

YES Tina.  I totally agree!

We only regret the chances we didn’t take.  So take them now!  Jump in with both feet.  You got this!

And, if you “don’t know what do to” when it comes to exercise or nutrition, that’s what I am here for!

Be Intense

As a health coach, I run a private group on facebook providing daily motivation, tips & tricks, support, recipes, and inspiration to those looking to live a healthier lifestyle.

The other day, a woman in my group inspired me.  She runs her own kickboxing studio outside of Philadelphia.  She is training a group of students and shared with me the following:

Intensity is a real way of being, and super positive when put in to action in the right ways. No one wants an intense boss, but an intense fitness partner is always wanted and appreciated. Plus, intensity gets YOU to your goals. You know the student that you think is “psycho”? They’re intensely working out – and they’re getting shit done and getting results.

Challenge: your next fitness endeavour (doesn’t matter if it’s yoga, running, crossfit), be intense. Be 100% present and give every move 100% effort. See what that feels like (because it’s amazing) Awaken your inner beast. We all have one.

intense

This really got me thinking.  Am I being intense enough?  Have I been pushing to my max?  I really had to think about it.   The answer was no.  Even though I exercise every day, I wasn’t always doing so with intensity.    I started challenging myself to dig just a little deeper, squat deeper, use heavier weights, push harder, move faster.

Think about this the next time you exercise.  Are you being intense enough?  Dig Seriously Deep (as Shaun T would say) you may find something within you that you didn’t even know was there.
