What does “healthy” mean?

On October 8, 2016 I crossed the finish line of the Rock n Roll Brooklyn Half Marathon, then stopped running.  I did not run again until almost one month later.   I took that time as an opportunity to slow down and reflect.  I thought about the past six months of training, about what I want to accomplish in the upcoming months.   I also took a step back and thought about my overall health.

run

For almost a year I was a bit obsessed with fitness and looking back now, it was probably an unhealthy obsession.  This time to reflect has made me dig deep and think about what health means to me.   One thing I learned about myself is I can accomplish amazing things if I set my mind to it, so that was pretty cool.  But what I am figuring out is how to weigh the risk and reward.

I was so fixated on body image as a measure of my health.  I would constantly look at my abs and think they weren’t good enough.  I rarely had dessert and almost never drank alcohol, even at BBQs and parties.  I had to exercise every day, and if I didn’t I was very cranky and sometimes mean.   I think something that opened my eyes was I kept trying to buy smaller and smaller clothes.  At one point I bought a pair of LUCKY jeans which were two sizes smaller than my average size.   I got them over my thighs (which is usually my largest area) and bought them immediately, feeling so proud of my accomplishment of fitting into this pair of pants.   Then, the first time I wore them I was so uncomfortable!  The band was cutting into my hips!  It suddenly dawned on me, no matter how hard I exercise, and deprive myself, these pants, or any size smaller for that matter, will never fit.  These are bones,  They are not going to shrink!  I am 5’9’’ tall and have had two children.  This is my physiology.    So, why am I killing myself?  My family does not care if I am a size 8 or a size 12.  They love me no matter what.  My kids won’t remember if I have tight abs, but they will remember if I am cranky around them.  My friend’s won’t care how I look in a bathing suit, but they will care if I keep saying no to desserts they lovingly bake in their kitchen for my enjoyment.  My pants will never love me, but my family does and I need to love myself.

Now, this is not to say that I still don’t LOVE fitness, and setting goals, and challenging my limits!  I will continue to do so, but maybe I will be a little kinder to myself, indulge a little, and live a lot more.    Keep my honest guys 🙂

Running through Summer

I don’t know about you, but I always have to switch things up to keep my fitness routine exciting.  If you don’t look forward to exercise, you won’t do it!

Last May (2015) I started my Beachbody fitness journey.  I did 21 day fix extreme, and over the subsequent year I completed a few rounds of extreme, body beast, hammer and chisel, and on demand challenge du jour.  It was last Sept/Oct. that I started waking up at 5am to get my workouts in and converted  part of my basement to a gym.  With warmer weather and the sun up so early, I can’t force myself to go downstairs so I have started running again!   I am considering registering for a half marathon (or 2) in the fall to keep myself on track.   I love sticking to a workout calendar/training plan.

Feels so good to get outside!

This morning I was doing an upper body workout downstairs and my daughter came down and said “mommy, its gorgeous out!  Why are you working out inside?”  Wise girl.  I will still utilize my “basement” gym because I have a new love for weight training, and it will only help my running performance… And sometimes we can’t leave the house.  I really don’t feel like running with 2 toddlers.

Questions for you:

Do you have any fall races lined up?  If so, what are they?

What is your favorite race distance?

Do you like running alone or with a running buddy?

I am thinking of creating a facebook group for people training for the same race… would you be interested in joining us?  The races on the table for me are the Philly Rock N Roll Half Marathon and the Brooklyn Rock n Roll Half Marathon.

You in?

Call to Action- Let’s Get Fit For Summer

With the warm weather upon us, we are reminded that summer is coming. I for one am so excited to do more outdoors. I just wish I didn’t have to cook dinner when I come home! Looks like I’ll be making more on the grill.

That being said, what I also love about this time of year is how committed people are to their health and fitness goals.

What are you doing to get fit? Is it working? Are you open to something NEW?

Last year, I started helping people achieve their health and fitness goals, and it has been the most rewarding experience.  A few highlights include

  • A mom who was on the verge of tears daily who is now content and enjoying her kids childhood
  • SEVERAL running PRs (2 5Ks improved by 4 minutes and a half marathon by 20)
  • 30 lb weight loss
  • A few women who were able to advance their yoga practice (hello headstand)
  • New friends made by all

I am looking for women, specifically working moms with little time on their hands. People who aren’t the best cooks and need quick and easy kid friendly recipes. Women who rarely take the time to take care of themselves and always put everyone else first. Women who are exhausted and just don’t know how they could possibly even find time to exercise. Women who have a gym membership, but never go. Women who are living on coffee for breakfast or their go to cereal they have been having since their college days. Women who used to have time to train for races before they had kids but now running takes too long.

I’m looking for you, because last year I was you! 30 minute workouts, easy food, and most of all SUPPORT have changed my life.

I’m not saying I can change your life, but you can. The power is in your hands and I have had the pleasure to connect with so many women this year, women who were hanging on my a thread and now just feel good.

MAY 1st is the start date. Send me a message and we’ll work together to find something that will work for your unique situation and preferences.

We are going to have an awesome summer, you ready to join us?

Snapchat

Snapchat.  I may be behind on this trend, but it is SO fun!   I am loving it.   Feel free to follow me at jessicaheidifit for some pretty crazy silly snaps, plus a lot of my kids too.

In light of my “snap” this morning.  I want to talk about LOVE.

Love yourself, and believe in yourself.  I was talking to someone last night who is interested in shakeology, interested in getting fit, and interested in the support I provide from my groups.  She wants to lose some weight and have more energy to play with her 3 kids.  Her hesitation… “what if I fail.”

This broke my heart!  We only fail, when we fail to try.  We all have limitless potential and are capable of phenomenal things.  Nothing sets you apart from the super successful person making 6 + figures and living the dream life.  The difference is they tried!

We all have a day 1, a week 1, month, year 1.  What is important is never losing sight of why we want something then taking the necessary steps to get there.

We can chant affirmations, create dream boards, and search for motivational posts on pinterest to our hearts content, but until we actually take those dreams and motivation and affirmations and ACT on them will something happen.

I hate how this quote has become SO overused, but if we want something we’ve never had, we have to do something we’ve never done…

I have been reading the Miracle Morning, and also listening to Jim Rohn, and I think the more enlightened version of that saying is, “SUCCESS IS SOMETHING YOU ATTRACT, BY THE PERSON YOU BECOME”

You are not that person yet.  But by making mindful choices daily to work later, or be kinder, or walk instead of drive, you are becoming that different person.

At the end of the day, who do you want to become?  I would love to help and encourage you to get there.   You hold all the power, now go unleash it.

Find your strong

I could start this with “beach weather is around the corner… Blah blah blah.” No.   Strong is not always about your body.

This NOT about looking good in a bathing suit.

This week has been really horrible. Social media always makes it seem like life is sunshine and rosy all the time. That everyone is doing everything and they’ve got their sh%# together and everyone is all smiles.

So not the case. No one wanted to wake up this week, I was a horrible mom and yelled most mornings, no screamed. I got to work stressed out, I missed 70% of my workouts, I picked the kids up late every day, I think they got a bath twice.

My current exercise group had an amazing week though, they felt stronger, more empowered, lost weight, got more done at work, had patience for their families. I just was not my best self.

We made up for it with ice cream Friday and some Saturday workouts.

The eternal debate… Hard or soft ice cream. Hard coffee ice cream is my weakness!

Felt better after sweating on Saturday.  Don’t have a weight bench for decline push-ups? Use the stairs!

Anyway, I am reaching out if you want help reclaiming your inner self. I need YOU to keep me accountable. I will be expanding April 4th and participating in #summerstrong with my coach.

I am going to share what I learn with you. I’ll recommend a workout you enjoy (from boot camp, cardio, weights to yoga/Pilates), I’ll provide motivation, support, a meal plan and friendship.

I have high interest already so comment below if you want in. I’m accepting 10 new clients only. We’ll chat and I’ll give more details.

Just visualize yourself 30, 60, 90 days from now. Where do you see yourself?   A faster runner?   Getting into that yoga headstand, or maybe succeeding at work, or having more patience for your family.   Let’s get you there.   It’s worked for me every time, now I want to share the feeling with you.

Nutrition, Exercise, Support…Success

Reclaim your strong.  Regain your happy.

A running & steak kind of day

I needed to get some fresh air.  Work has been totally hectic and I’ve been spending so much time at meetings and conference calls I needed to step away so I took my lunch break to go for a wonderful run outside.   There were so many people out!  I think we all had the same idea.  I made sure to pack my clothes just in case the opportunity presented itself!

I love my bridesmaid gift from my sister in laws wedding.  The perfect tote for sneakers and a change of clothes!

Running has such a transformative power.  You are outside, the sun is shining, you are pushing your limits, and all the stress from your brain starts melting away and you are able to really think.   I came back in totally refreshed and with new ideas for how to innovate in the lab.

run

James came home with some Chinese food but I already had dinner cooking.  I still took my fortune cookie though!  I agree with this sentiment whole heartedly!

I don’t know about you but I just love steak.   I’m super happy to report I made this recipe by winging it and it was delicious!

1 package skillet steak ($6.50 at ShopRite).  I used 3 slices

Montreal Steak seasoning, lift coating

1 onion

1 pepper

1/2 cup quinoa.

Softened the onion and pepper in olive oil in a cast iron skillet, cooked the steak on high heat about a minute or so each side. Had a side of quinoa for carbs.

Quick, easy, inexpensive, and delicious.

My favorite dessert is a container of yogurt topped with fruit.  Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and kiwi.

No Excuses

I am going to get so REAL. I hate excuses. The number one thing I hear ALL THE TIME is “I don’t have time.” Guess what, That’s BS. What you are really saying is “This isn’t important to me”.

We are all given the same 24 hours in a day. If you want time, you need to MAKE it. We are all capable of anything we set our minds to. What sets you apart from that guy over there who runs marathons, runs a company, travels for business, and still spends time with his family? NOTHING. They MAKE the time.

Think about it, if you wake up at 6 and go to bed at 10, that is 16 waking hours!

  • Full Time Job (9 hours)
  • Hour commute (2 hours)
  • Free time: (FIVE HOURS!)

What are you doing with those FIVE extra hours???? Cooking? Cleaning? Spending quality time with your partner, kids, pets? I hope so.

My guess is you are watching TV, Playing on your ipad, Scrolling through fb, surfing the internet…

I want YOU. If you are reading this and want a change in your life. Get OFF YOUR BUTT. I need you to give me 22 minutes. YES, just 22 minutes of those 5 extra hours you have when you aren’t working or commuting. That is less 1 TV episode.

I want a group of MEN and WOMEN, committed to changing their outlook on life, sick of making excuses for themselves to join me on March 28th to start a new fitness program. Do it from home, only 22 minutes and start taking control of your life.

Is it you?

Contact me now. No excuses.

22 Minute Hard Corps Review

On Feb. 7th I was so pumped because there was a sneak peak at Tony Horton’s new workout which is launching March 1st.  It is called 22 Minute Hard Corps.  When I came home from skiing, I was so tired, but I had to try it out, and it was only 22 minutes, so why not right?  Needless to say, I got in a great sweat!!!

What is 22 Minute Hard Corps?

22 Minute Hard Corps is your no-nonsense, boot-camp-butt-kicking fitness program. Legendary trainer Tony Horton has created a challenging, but simple to follow workout program inspired by training program techniques used in the military.

Each workout is a quick–and intense–total body drill designed to get participants “boot camp fit” in just 8 weeks. Each day of the program consists of a series of total body rounds within the 22 minute workout window, rotating through functional resistance, cardio, and core focused workouts.  It was quick and it was FUN!

8 weeks,  22 minutes.  Period.

In the video I tried out, there were jumping jacks, burpees, bear crawls, shuffles, etc.  No equipment needed, I did everything in my living room and sweat my butt off.

Check it out!

Want to do it with me?  JOIN ME NOW!

You can try right away, if you purchase with the link above because you get on demand 30 days for free!

This is seriously another reason why I love club memberships to beachbody.   You get to preview new workouts or premium workouts and stream them from any wifi device.  The next preview of 22 Minute Hard Corps will be available on Feb. 22nd.

If you aren’t sure about doing a program, or want to try out a bunch, on demand is the way to go.   This video does a much better job of explaining how awesome it is.

Fitness Friday

OK, I guess it’s time to start!  I have been so hesitant to actually begin but sometimes you just have to take that leap and figure it out as you go.

A few months ago I read the book the Compound Effect by Darren Hardy.  I seriously loved that book so much I am reading it again.  Confession, I don’t actually have time to read so I listen on audible during my commute into work.

In the very beginning of his book he wrote that his dad religiously got up and exercised every morning and he could set his clock by his father’s workouts.  Rain, sleet or shine, he was out there doing his old school military presses and dead lifts.  I thought, “Man, I would love if that was me.  I could never.  I hate getting up in the morning.”  Then I caught myself.  Why couldn’t it be me?  I’d just have to do it.  I’d just have to try!  So a few months ago I set a small goal for myself to get up before my family and do my workout before everyone woke up.  Just try for 1 week I told myself.

The first thing I did was tackle my excuses.

  1.  I am always cold in the morning and I know I hate changing out of my PJs.
    • I slept in my workout clothes with sweatpants and a sweatshirt on over it.
  2. I have no motivation to get up.
    • I put my phone next to my bed and in the morning when my alarm went off I went into our motivation group and looked at all the amazing things people were accomplishing.  I also went on instagram and searched some hashtags like #noexcuses #fitfamily #hammerandchisel or any other fitness program I was planning on doing that day.  It lit a fire under me to get it done so I could share my own success

After one week of rising before the rest of the house I was hooked.  I can’t say I do it 7 days a week, but more days than not I am up, have exercised, showered, and dressed before I hear the little footsteps coming down the stairs.   It has been a good 5 months now and I relish those quiet hours in the house just for me.

morning workout

I am currently doing the Beachbody Program called Hammer and Chisel.  Today was Max Hammer.  The premise is to fatigue your muscle with movements for 1 minute, then use max weight for 8 reps.  I love it.  I am seeing serious gains in muscle definition.

Last night the kids stayed up a LITTLE bit later than usual because we rented the movie Hotel Transylvania 2.  It was so cute.  I swear those movies are made for adults as much as for kids.   The little ones woke up, we got them dressed, had some breakfast, and were out the door.

Jimmy is liking this stuffed Cheetah that we won at the boardwalk this past summer.  He wanted the cheetah to eat breakfast with us this morning.  Then he played with the Sagi bobble head.  I think Sagi was telling the Cheetah he needed to push harder.  Jimmy even stole some of my shakeology this morning.  That kid loves it!  Today’s flavor was cafe latte with banana, coconut extract and some cinnamon.  YUM!

Have a great Friday everyone!
